“Sometime in the future in a state controlled society, conformity and homogeneity are the rule; a time when people have designations instead of names. A man, THX 1138, and a woman, LUH 3417, rebel against their rigidly controlled society…”

Matt Clark, Brighton based experimental guitarist and composer, performs an improvised live score to the film, interweaving with and adding to Lalo Schiffrin’s sparse original soundtrack.

Support from Cinerama [Stripped Back 3-Piece Format]:

In 1997… [David] Gedge (The Wedding Present) started work on a new project called Cinerama in which he indulged his love of film music from John Barry to Ennio Morricone via Serge Gainsbourg, Blaxploitation, easy listening and surf music!

THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN OUR MAIN SPACE – KOMEDIA DOWNSTAIRS

Matt Clark; Three

Matt Clark; Three is a new, rhythm based jazz project I’m starting. The music takes influence from the burgeoning new jazz scene on both sides of the Atlantic, but also throws a nod to influences as diverse as Krautrock, funk and hip-hop.

It’s a convergence ideas inspired by all the new music I’ve heard over the last couple of years, and aims to be more than just a gigging band. Think events, happenings, art installations, film scores…

It’s early days, but stay tuned for more…

Caaw “Strange Pictures” – Reactions

“Strippers, Down & Outs, & Other Ne’er-Do-Wells”

[Review in PluggedIn Brighton, published September 26, 2019 by Chris Hibberd]

Strange Pictures? What does it mean? Half remembered memories of what you thought you saw. Did you? The new release from Caaw opens a window into a world of bourbon-soaked memories with jazz-inflected avant-garde music playing and burbling in the background. Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits are having a tussle over a perfume filled top hat whilst Dr John watches on from the bayou distractedly.
_______

“Quirky, whimsical, melodic lines in the tradition of great storytellers, French Quarter benders, trickster music, broken glass drunken poetry of lovers and thieves…” – Margaret Garrett (Mr. Airplane Man)

Morgan Ryan Session

I’m very proud to have been asked to add some guitar to this track for Brighton based singer songwriter Morgan Ryan. It’s a beautiful song about the situation at the US-Mexico border.

The Devil’s Storybook – Annika Brown

I’m really excited to be working with singer-songwriter Annika Brown on the arrangements and performance of her upcoming album “The Devil’s Storybook”

“[Matt’s] guitar and Annika’s voice… you’ve got some pretty tasty potential there!”

Serious Child Video

A day out in the country filming a live video for “Time Keeps Rolling” and other songs, ahead of our upcoming gigs at Cecil Sharp House in Camden and Petworth.

Elephant’s Graveyard Review

Excellent review of Elephant’s Graveyard from Fringe Review – I’m really proud to have been part of this, and the play will now be a full production run next year!

“Billed as a rehearsed reading director David Eaton has managed more in the flexible NVT Studio space. With Kasha Goodenough on production and managing, Vanessa Barrett and Mark Green on seedy costume designs – this is a full costume performance. The overall scarlet/black detail of costumery is carried to Adam Kinkaid’s scarlet/black scene painting. Keith Dawson’s light design is unfussy. Leanne McKenzie’s light and sound operation comes to the fore in balancing the live musicians: Adam Hewitt music director, Becca Huggett singer, guitarist Matthew Clark and Neil Rocks on drums. Marie Ellis deserves notice for voice coaching.”
